Linux Operating Systems
Linux refers to the family of operating systems which are based on the open source Linux kernel. Since the Linux kernel is open source, there are many distributions available which combine a Linux kernel with other utilities and libraries. Many of these distributions are free, and more popular ones often have commercial support available.
Linux distributions can be broadly categorised in terms of the underlying package management or base distribution used. We have experience developing and supporting applications running in many environments, including:
- Debian-based (includes Debian, Ubuntu, Knoppix, ...)
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL4, RHEL5, Centos, ...)
- Gentoo Linux
- Slackware (SLAX)
